Review: Sony Mobile Projector MP-CD1

A few years ago, slim and light-weight products would mean compromise on performance and quality. That’s not the case anymore. Today’s mobile devices offer top-notch performance and good quality. Sony’s Mobile Projector MP-CD1 is one of the brilliant examples.
The MP-CD1 is slightly larger than a smartphone. However, it is capable of projecting a 120-inch screen from a mere 12 feet away. Measuring 3.3-by-0.63-by-5.9-inches in size and weighing in at 182-gms, the projector comes wrapped in an aluminum body.
The projector uses a standard tripod mount for more projection options, including ceiling projections. Sony also included a built-in fan to dissipate heat, which has been designed to reduce noise when watching movies. While the projection size can go up to 120-inches, the resolution is a tad lower at 854-by-480 pixels.
The projector uses Texas Instruments DLP IntelliBright technology for projecting images. In terms of brightness, the MP-CD1 offers 105 ANSI lumens and comes packed with a 5,000mAh built-in battery, that Sony says should offer around two hours of projection time. What’s more, the MP-CD1 can also charge smartphones and other mobile devices through its USB port.
During our tests, we were able to use the projector for a little more than 2 hours, before it needed charging again. The projector also comes with a dynamic mode that boosts the projection’s brightness and saturation when needed. One of the brilliant features the projector comes with is the auto keystone correction, in case the projection surface isn’t flat.
Since the MP-CD1 comes with an HDMI port, it can connect to a display outlet to a number of devices such as laptops, gaming platforms, media streaming devices and smartphones. Sony also offers an add-on (sold separately) that connects to the HDMI port to add wireless functionality.
The device charges through a USB-C port while an audio jack allows for adding speakers or headphones to enable audio. The overall performance of the device is quite good – the only gripe was that the projection quality could at least have been in HD.
That aside, the Sony MP-CD1 could be one of the better options out there on the market, if you are looking for a dependable and quality mobile projector. I am confident that the Sony MP-CD1 projector can easily perform as a perfect projector for viewing anything from business meetings to a family movie night.
