Review: AOC G Line Second Gen CU34G2X Curved Gaming Monitor

AOC’s new G Line Second Gen CU34G2X is a 34-inches curved gaming monitor that offers a refresh rate of 144 Hz, a response time of 1ms and a wide screen aspect ratio of 21:9. The monitor offers a WQHD resolution at 3440-by-1440 pixels and a brightness of 300 nits.

The AOC CU34G2X is built using Samsung’s curved VA (Vertical Alignment) panel. Now, this panel offers a static contrast ratio of 3,000:1, 178° viewing angles, and true 8-bit colour depth. The CU342X is also a curved gaming monitor and offers a 1500mm radius curved panel.

The monitor also supports Adaptive Sync technology that ensures your monitor’s refresh rate is always synced with that of your processor’s. You also get HDR technology that improves picture quality by delivering better contrast and colour accuracy.

Inside the box, the monitor comes with a stand and base, both of which feel quite sturdy. No tools are required to attach the monitor panel to the stand. You also get a bunch of cables that include the DisplayPort, HDMI and USB. An IEC power cord provides the necessary electricity to power up the monitor.

In terms of the design and build quality, the monitor gets full marks. It offers a stylish design and some gamer-inspired accents all around it. The monitor also offers a wide range of ergonomics, including up to 130mm height adjustment, +/- 30° swivel, -5°/23° tilt, and 100x100mm VESA mount compatibility.

When it comes to connectivity, you get a boatload – there are two HDMI 2.0 ports, two DisplayPort 1.4 inputs, a headphones jack, and one upstream + four downstream USB 3.0 ports (one with quick charging). Keep in mind, though, that the HDMI 2.0 maxes out at 100Hz at 3440×1440. For 144Hz, you will need to use DisplayPort 1.4. If your GPU has DP 1.2, you will be limited to 120Hz at 3440×1440. The monitor also supports FreeSync over all four ports.

Hit up the OSD and you will find lots of other options that let you tweak the display’s settings. These features include the Shadow Control that improves visibility in darker games and Game Color that offers quick colour saturation adjustments. You also get customisable crosshair overlays, a frame counter, and pre-calibrated picture modes (FPS, RTS, Racing, and three fully customisable profiles).

In addition, you also get features such as Picture in Picture, Picture by Picture, and High Dynamic Range support. The OSD menu is very user-friendly, and navigating through it via the four small hotkeys beneath the bottom bezel was easy, too.

When it comes to performance, the AOC CU34G2X truly shines. The colour and contrast, the in-game details and so on, just pop off the screen. The colours didn’t look oversaturated at all and everything looked very natural. It also offers good video processing and a fast refresh rate.

In terms of screen uniformity, the CU34G2X showed no visible issues, even at the edges. The anti-glare layer is fitted tightly, making that performance even more impressive. The picture modes include a uniformity option that couples up with the included calibration data sheet very well by raising the black levels.

Recently, ultra-wide curved monitors have become a sort of “go-to” for most gamers out there. The AOC CU34G2X is a great ultra-wide curved gaming monitor that ticks most of the points that gamers are looking for in a good gaming monitor.

For a price of AED 2500, the AOC CU34G2X offers excellent value for money; immersive image quality with high pixel density, contrast, and a wide colour gamut; plenty of gaming features including FreeSync; and ergonomic stand and rich connectivity options.
