Review: ASUS ZenWiFi AX Mini (XD4)

A mesh Wi-Fi system is an ideal solution for large properties. They handle all the farthest rooms and corners with ease and can provide coverage to different floors of multi-story homes. Even a basic mesh system can give you whole-home coverage and superb, seamless Wi-Fi performance everywhere in the house. And that includes your backyard and garage.

ASUS offers one such AX1800 dual-band mesh Wi-Fi system on the market called the ASUS ZenWiFi AX Mini (XD4). This system includes one ASUS AX1800 WiFi 6 router and two extending nodes to offer superfast, reliable, and secure WiFi connections — inside or outside your home. While all the units in this system may look alike, they are not the same.

On the bottom, the router unit (model XD4R) has two Gigabit network ports. One is a WAN/LAN port, and the other is a LAN port. The node (model XD4N) has just one LAN port. You can use this port to host a wired device or the backhaul link to the router.

If you have used ASUS’ AiMesh routers, you know that a router can either work as a router or as a node in an AiMesh system. This still holds true for the XD4R unit. However, the XD4N unit can only work as a satellite. It can’t work as a router since it has no WAN port.

Setting up the system is similar to setting up any AiMesh system. First, you set up the router unit just like you would set up any router with a web interface. You can also use the Asus Router mobile app to set it up. Then set up the two nodes to the router to form a mesh.

The ASUS ZenWiFi AX Mini (XD4) mesh wi-fi system can cover an area of 6000 sq. ft. Since the system supports WiFi 6, it can offer a bandwidth of 1800 Mbps which is good enough for even 4K video streaming and live streaming. In addition, you can have multiple network names for multiple network bands. So if you need to provide guest access to guests coming to your house, you can set up guest access on one of the bands with ease.

You also get AiProtection Classic with Parental Controls that allows you to filter content and restrict access to unwanted websites, through ASUS’ mobile app. The app is well-designed with a good level of access to the router.

When you hear “mesh wifi system” you may think it would be very difficult to set up the network. However, that’s not the case here. Everything is quite intuitive to setup. ASUS also has done well in terms of labeling the RJ45 ports with two different colours. Each ZenWiFi XD4 comes with a reset button and a WPS button.

The coverage of the network was very good. The price may seem a bit expensive compared to other competitors in the market. However, the ease of setup and use, the customization options, and the security features make it all worthwhile. If you are on the market for a dependable mesh Wi-Fi system for your home or office, you can’t go wrong with the ASUS ZenWiFi AX Mini (XD4).
