Keith Li, the Country Manager for UAE at Huawei Consumer Business Group, speaks about the impact of COVID-19 on the education sector and the role technology can play in supporting learning in STEM subjects

How has the pandemic affected the education sector in the region?
The education sector as students and teachers moved towards an e-learning model through remote sessions. As such, the need for powerful, portable, and interconnected devices has never been so important. Our ‘Together, Level Up in Style’ campaign was aimed to raise awareness of the shared ecosystem of products Huawei offers that can equip students and teachers with tools that support their e-learning.

Devices such as the HUAWEI Mate 40 Pro, HUAWEI MateBook X, and HUAWEI MatePad Pro, with advanced features such as multiscreen collaboration, are a part of Huawei’s Seamless AI Life ecosystem of connected devices and services. This approach provides students with the freedom they need to work online from home, at school, or on the go.

What sort of opportunities do you see in the regional education sector?
Huawei is committed to investing in R&D to produce technologies and services that can support people in their daily lives. That is why we continue to develop our Seamless AI Life concept of a shared ecosystem of devices and services. This empowers students with the ability to effortlessly switch tasks between their Huawei smartphone, laptop, tablets, or wearables ensuring they always have the right tools at hand.

With devices such as the HUAWEI Mate 40 Pro, HUAWEI MateBook X, and HUAWEI MatePad Pro we are well placed to provide consumers in the education sector with the products and services they need to succeed. Is there a digital disconnect despite tech tools being available for distance education?
Huawei firmly believes technology should be made available to as many people as possible and across many different price points. As such Huawei provides a wide range of options for consumers based on their requirements. Whether that is the flagship 5G HUAWEI Mate 40 Pro smartphone or the attractively priced HUAWEI MatePad tablet, consumers have an extensive variety of options to choose from.

By combining this with Huawei’s shared ecosystem, consumers are provided with the digital solutions that best fit their needs. This approach helps users stay digitally connected so they can take advantage of the benefits these technologies bring no matter their background.

Do you provide solutions today to make STEM learning a seamless experience?
STEM is at the core of everything we do at Huawei and it plays a central role in the devices we make and the services we offer. From designing and precision engineering our smartphones to the vivid screens used in our tablets, STEM is integral to what we do. As a result, we understand how to leverage these technologies in a way that can support students along their STEM learning journey.

Huawei has developed a range of products such as the HUAWEI MatePad Pro, HUAWEI MateBook X, and HUAWEI Mate 40 Pro that allow students to learn across STEM subjects. When these devices are used in combination with the services and connectivity provided by Huawei’s 1+8+N strategy, the potential for learning is further amplified.

By adding features such as Multi-screen Collaboration users can copy text, and drag and drop files between devices. This can be done while having multiple windows open with up to three different apps side by side, making it ideal for learning. This enables users to seamlessly edit their work in one window while having another app open to carry out research. As such it can be an invaluable tool for learning.

Huawei has also been playing a proactive role in supporting local app developers. As the world increasingly moves to digital these skills will become increasingly important. Huawei has invested US$1 billion in our “Shining-Star” program to incentivise global developers to launch their apps on HUAWEI AppGallery and has so far inspired 10,000 innovative apps worldwide.

What about the security aspects of online learning. How can that be addressed?
Security and privacy remain a high priority for Huawei and with the launch of the EMUI 11 software update on smartphones and tablets has further strengthened. This new update now ensures messages and calls remain on a user’s phone if they are sharing their screen during a presentation. It also allows users to remove sensitive information (such as time and location information) before sharing a photo while enhancing app control and monitoring to prevent unauthorised access to a user’s cameras, photos, microphones, and contacts.

These features further complement HUAWEI’s already robust security measures. HUAWEI AppGallery also has a full-cycle security and protection system, including developer real-name verification, the four-step review process, download and installation protection as well as a prevention mechanism for secure app operation.
