Review: ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED (UX582)

ASUS has taken its ZenBook Pro Duo series a notch higher with the launch of the new ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED (UX582). The laptop was launched a couple of days ago on the UAE market. However, ASUS was kind enough to lend us the only ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED (UX582) in the Middle East region for review, a few days in advance.

The UX582 offers an evolved ZenBook Pro Duo design. The chassis and lid are made of magnesium-aluminum alloy, and the laptop also sports a new hinge design. In addition, you also get a new ScreenPad Plus UI and associated features.

The new ErgoLift AAS plus (Active Aerodynamic System) hinge design offers an ergonomic viewing and touchscreen experience. ASUS has used Zinc alloy to construct the hinges, thus enhancing durability and strength. The new hinge module raises the ScreenPad Plus angle and also lifts the back of the laptop slightly to improve thermal efficiency.

There is a reduced gap between the main and secondary display when compared with the predecessor. You also get 36% higher airflow to keep your ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED cool even during trying times. ASUS has also thrown in an advanced cooling system.

You get up to 36% thermal performance improvement, versus the previous generation. There are dual 97-blade fans inside the chassis that provide 11% higher airflow than the previous generation and the six copper heat pipes make sure the heat is dissipated as quickly as possible. The ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED weighs just 2.4-kgs and is 21.5-mm slim.

As soon as you open up the lid, you come face to face with a gorgeous 14.1-inch OLED 4K UHD NanoEdge touchscreen that offers a 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut.

The screen itself is of an OLED 4K UHD NanoEdge touchscreen variety that offers wide 178° viewing angles. The display offers a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and a response time of 0.2 ms.

ASUS also made sure there’s a 70% reduction in blue light emission, versus normal LCD. The display further carries the TÜV Rheinland Eye Care certification, is PANTONE Validated, and offers DisplayHDR 500 True Black.

Under the hood, the ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED is powered by an Intel Core i9-10980HK processor. You also get 32GB of DDR4 memory, the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 graphics, 1 TB PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD storage, and support for WiFi 6 (802.11ax) that offers speeds of up to 2.4 Gbps.

In terms of connectivity, you get two Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, one standard HDMI port, and one 3.5-mm audio jack. The laptop is powered by a 92 Wh lithium-polymer battery, which ASUS claims offers up to 6.2 hours of battery life.

The ScreenPad Plus features a brand-new Control Center UI and is now a lot more snappy. You can now adjust the location of the Control Center and snap it to the right, left, or bottom, according to preference. You get a new Control Center button that makes it possible to minimise the taskbar into a floating button, and enables an auto-hide function that hides the taskbar entirely.

Buttons on the new Control Center taskbar can also be added or moved to allow for customisation. The Launcher is the fastest way to launch your favourite apps on the ScreenPad Plus. Simply tap or click an app icon to launch the app. It can also be personalised by adding new apps from the main screen to the Launcher, or by removing apps from the Launcher by clicking the edit button in the top right corner.

ASUS has also added a new Control Panel app to ScreenXpert 2.0. This function currently supports Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, and Lightroom Classic. When the user opens any of these apps, the Control Panel app opens a corresponding panel suited to each software set, enabling commonly used functions such as zoom, brightness, and contrast via sliders, buttons, and dials.

Creators can fully customise the functions and icon positioning for each of the app-specific decks. The Control Panel will automatically launch the deck assigned to each of the supported apps.

As you must have already guessed, the ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED (UX582) is made with content creators in mind. The solid specs this laptop offers guarantees top-notch performance.

The display also offers an ultrawide colour gamut of 100% DCI-P3, which is widely used in the motion picture industry. Add to that PANTONE Validation for precise colour accuracy, and you have a winner in your hands.

If you are a content creator, it may take a while to get adjusted to the workflow, especially if you take into account the ScreenPad Plus. However, once you get a hang of it, the workflow becomes so much easier to get lots of things done in a lesser timeframe.

For a price of AED 11,999, the ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED (UX582) offers productivity, powerhouse performance, good design and build quality, and an excellent overall package. The ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED (UX582) thus walks away with the Editors’ Choice Award.
