Review: ASUS AX3000 RT-AX58U Dual Band WiFi 6 Router

ASUS’ AX3000 RT-AX58U is a dual-band WiFi 6 (802.11ax) router that supports MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology. The router also comes packed with the lifetime AiProtection Pro network security, which is powered by Trend Micro. What’s more, it is also compatible with the ASUS AiMesh WiFi system – so you can create your own mesh network for seamless wireless coverage across your house.

This router supports the Wi-Fi standard 802.11AX (Wi-Fi 6) and 160MHz bandwidth for better connectivity. Due to this, you can expect a total networking speed of about 3000Mbps, which includes 574Mbps on the 2.4GHz band, and 2402Mbps on the 5GHz band. It also means that the router supports network standards such as IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, WiFi 4 (802.11n), WiFi 5 (802.11ac), WiFi 6 (802.11ax), IPv4, and IPv6.

Inside the box, you get the ASUS AX3000 RT-AX58U Dual Band WiFi 6 Router, the VIP warranty booklets, the quick start guide, an RJ-45 cable, and the power adapter.

The router itself isn’t huge and weighs just 538-gms. On the front, you get a bunch of LEDs that include the Power, 2.4G, 5G, four for the LAN, and one for the WAN.

At the rear, you get all the ports that include an RJ45 Gigabits BaseT port for WAN, four RJ45 Gigabits BaseT ports for LAN, and a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port. At the rear, you also get the power on/off switch, the power port, a WPS button, and the reset button.

The router comes with four external antennas, that can transmit and receive 2.4GHz (2×2) and 5GHz (2×2). It is powered by a 1.5GHz tri-core processor and is packed with 256MB of flash storage and 512MB of RAM.

Setting up the RTAX58U is really easy if you use the ASUS router app, which is available for both Android and iOS devices. Fire up the app and follow the onscreen instructions to connect the router to your modem. It took us less than 15 minutes to get online with this router.

Once connected, we ran the Speedtest to check out the connectivity quality. We got very good connectivity results overall – did not matter whether we were close to the router or in another room with a wall in between the router and our device. The connectivity was consistent with no drop in the connection.

One of the standout features of the RT-AX58U is that it supports the AiMesh function. This allows you to connect the router to another AiMesh supported router, to expand the Wi-Fi coverage. This is particularly useful if you live in a large apartment, townhouse, or villa.

The ASUS RT-AX58U also comes with the AiProtection Pro Antivirus feature, which is powered by TrendMicro. This service is designed to block any website containing malware or virus. During our tests, this feature worked perfectly and did not affect the connectivity speed.

You also get a parental control feature that can block websites for selected users based on a preset category. The built-in Adaptive QoS feature is great – it lets you select which device you want to have a higher priority. It also lets you choose what kind of Internet traffic will be able to enjoy a higher priority. There are multiple QoS modes included such as gaming and video conferencing to optimize the connectivity for that usage.

And you also get some more “bells and whistles”, in the form of features such as dual-WAN, VPN server, VPN client, download master, and lots more. While most users may not end up using these features, you will appreciate these add-ons, if you are an enthusiast.

For a price of AED 598.55, the ASUS AX3000 RT-AX58U Dual Band WiFi 6 Router comes across as a truly value-for-money router. It offers very strong WiFi coverage, lots of customisation options, fast WiFi 6 performance, parental controls, security controls, and accompanies a well-designed app and a great web-based interface.
