Huawei’s new MateBook D 14 (2023) now feels less cramped compared with the previous models with a 16:9 display. That’s because the new laptop now packs in a 14-inch IPS display that offers a resolution of 1920-by-1200 pixels, and an aspect ratio of 16:10. You also get a 90% screen-to-body ratio, a pixel density of 161-ppi, and a maximum brightness of 300 nits.
What’s more, the display also supports 45% of the NTSC colour gamut, offers a viewing angle of 178 degrees, and comes with a contrast ratio of 1200:1. Just above the display is where you will find the 720P HD web camera.
The overall build quality of the laptop is pretty good – it comes packed in a sleek metallic body, which weighs 1.39kgs and measures 15.9mm in thickness. Inside the box, you get the Huawei MateBook D 14, a 65 W USB-C power adapter that comes with an integrated connection between the adapter and charging cable (which means the charging cable cannot be detached), a quick start, and the warranty card.
In terms of I/O ports, you get a good selection. This includes a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (which supports display, data transmission, and external power supply of 10 W (5V/2A)), one USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 (which supports data transmission and external power supply of 10 W (5V/2A)), one USB-A 2.0 (which supports data transmission and external power supply of 7.5 W (5V/1.5A)), one HDMI, and one 3.5 mm headset and microphone 2-in-1 jack.
Under the hood, the laptop is powered by a 13th Gen Intel Core i7-1360P processor, while graphics performance is handled by Intel Iris Xᵉ Graphics. This is coupled with up to 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 1TB of NVMe PCIe SSD storage. The battery is rated at 56 Wh, while wireless connectivity options include support for WLAN at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and Bluetooth 5.1.
One of the stand-out features of the Huawei MateBook D 14 is that it comes packed with Huawei’s Metaline Antenna, which offers a 270m long-range for wireless network connections. This technology, according to Huawei, increases file download speed by 43%, decreases conference video delays by 38%, and boosts anti-interference and wall penetration performance.
Another stand-out feature of the MateBook D 14 is the Super Device multi-screen collaboration. This feature allows you to transfer files, extend screens, and connect to wireless headphones seamlessly, between multiple Huawei devices. This means you can, for instance, start drafting on your tablet during a creative briefing, drag the work to your PC for further editing, and then drag it back to your tablet, where it can be shared with greater ease.
You can also drag any text, images, and files to SuperHub at will, and simply paste, transfer, and share them to your connected devices, such as your smartphone or tablet in batches with ease. The overall performance of the MateBook D 14 is quite good.
The Huawei MateBook D 14 screen offers very good colour contrast, with stable viewing angles. This means it is ideal for outdoor use if the sun is not overly bright. Due to its solid specs, you can use the laptop for work and play. Although it is not geared towards gaming, the MateBook D 14 can run most games with good performance.
We also ran a few benchmarks on the MateBook D 14. In CineBench R23, the laptop scored 1916 in the single-core processor test, and 11732 in the multi-core test. In 3DMark, the D 14 scored 20241 points in “Night Raid”, 5617 in Fire Strike, and 2027 in Time Spy. In PCMark10, the D 14 scored 6229 points. Battery performance is also pretty good at 7 hours on a single charge.
The Huawei MateBook D 14 impresses in its category, ticking most of the boxes to be a very good choice. Huawei’s meticulous focus on details sets it apart from other companies, notably the ability to stay connected on Wi-Fi networks from a distance of up to 270 meters. If you are looking for a lightweight laptop boasting a modern design and minimal screen bezels, equipped with cutting-edge hardware and a reliable battery, the Huawei MateBook D 14 could be one of the options you could look at.
