Review: Huawei Mate 9

Huawei announced its latest flagship – the Mate 9 – with much fun and fare at a global launch event in Munich, Germany, a couple of weeks ago.  During the event, the company announced that it is going to go a step ahead by offering premium features at an affordable price point. The launch did raise a few eyebrows as the company launched the Mate 9 with boatload of features.

At first look, you will be surprised the fact that Huawei managed to squeeze in a monster screen into a form factor that is actually smaller than most “Plus” flagships out there on the market. The phone’s got one of the highest screen-to-body ratios of any smartphone available, which is good, because the screen really is ginormous at 5.9-inches.

The display though just offers 1080p, though many flagships from other brands have moved onto offering Quad HD resolutions. But that’s not a biggie – the screen on the Mate 9 is quite brilliant. In terms of the overall size, the Mate 9 measures 156.9-by-78.9-by-7.9mm, comes packed in a metal body and weighs just 190-gms.

The phone is available in a bunch of colors ranging from black, white, silver and so on. We received the space grey variant for a review. Turn the phone around and you will find the magic the Mate 9 is known for – the dual Leica lens equipped camera setup (more on that later).

The circular fingerprint sensor sits on the rear of the device, just below the camera and as is the case with all Huawei’s phones it’s both super-fast and accurate. Out of almost 30  attempts, the fingerprint scanner was able to correctly unlock the phone on every occasion. We have tried the fingerprint sensors on many flagships, but none comes close to what the Mate 9 can achieve.

Under the hood, the Mate 9 runs on Huawei’s new top of the line buy zithromax online pharmacy processor the Kirin 960. The phone also features 4GB of RAM and built-in storage capacity of 64GB. The Mate 9 is also a dual SIM phone and offers a microSD card slot, which can be used to expand the storage space further.

Coming to the dual Leica-powered camera setup, we have to admit that the Mate 9 produces some of the best still photos we’ve ever seen from a phone. Images are produced with terrific dynamic range, awesome colour depth, and Leica’s image processing provides options and controls for users, producing more photographic output.

The photography magic continues with the Mate 9’s excellent Wide Aperture Mode, which can blur the background of your photos, making images look like they were captured by a proper DSLR. This the best implementation of software blur we’ve ever seen, and it surpasses what other flagships with similar functionality can achieve.

With the Mate 9, Huawei has also improved how the phone captures videos. You now get hardware image stabilization, and the top resolution has been increased to 3840-by-2160 (UHD). Huawei has also employed H.265 compression to  keep file sizes of video footages in check. Again, in terms of videos, the Huawei Mate 9 is a winner. It offers crisp and colourful video.

In closing, all we have to say is that Huawei has a winner in its hands, yet again, with the new Mate 9. If you are on the market for a big-screen phone, that offers excellent build quality, awesome photography capabilities and top-notch performance, all at an affordable price tag, you really can’t go wrong with the Huawei Mate 9. The phone thus wins the Arabian Reseller Editors’ Choice nod!
