Review: OPPO F7

OPPO’s smartphones have long been known for the quality of the selfies they can produce. The company has upped the ante with the new OPPO F7 smartphone by including a 25MP sensor as the front camera. What’s more, the company has also equipped the front camera with AI.

Coming in at AED 1249, this gorgeous smartphone comes packed with a 6.23-inch Super Full Screen and a glossy design in two different variations and three colours. On the front of the phone, all you get is the display that comes with a 19:9 aspect ratio, which is slightly different from the 18:9 displays we have seen on most flagship phones out there on the market.

Instead of the usual metal back panel, OPPO is using an all-plastic body on the F7. The phone weighs just 158-gms and feels premium. The phone comes in three different colours – Diamond Black, Platinum Silver, and Solar Red. We received the Platinum Silver variant for review.

On the right edge of the phone, you will find the power button and dual SIM slot. The dual SIM slot comes with two dedicated slots for nano-SIMs and a dedicated slot for micro SD. On the left edge, you will find the volume rockers. Up top, you will find a lone noise cancelling microphone, while at the bottom you will find a 3.5mm audio jack, a micro USB port and the speaker grille.

Under the hood, the phone is powered by a MediaTek Helio P60, which is accompanied by the Mali-G72 MP3 for all your graphics requirements. You also get 4GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded to up to 256GB using the microSD card slot. The OPPO F7 runs on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo, which has ColorOS 5.0 built on top of it.

Now, let’s talk about the cameras. The F7 is being billed as a selfie phone. Hence, OPPO wants to outdo every selfie phone on the market by including a 25-megapixel front-facing camera with a bright f/2.0 lens. The upgraded selfie sensor comes with an updated camera app to complete the deal.

The F7’s selfie cameras are coupled with the company’s AI Beauty Technology 2.0 and thus you end up with some amazing selfies. AI-powered selfies are a step up from your typical photo filters. The AI engine recognises and learns your facial features as you take more photos. There are also new AR stickers which add more fun and cuteness to your selfies.

The rear camera, meanwhile, is powered by a 16-megapixel f/1.8 shooter paired with a single LED flash. OPPO has still decided against a dual camera setup for the F series. The company, however, has embedded AI functionality into the rear camera as well, which aids in scene recognition. It can identify 16 different scenes and objects in real-time.

We ran the AnTuTu benchmark on the OPPO F7 and we ended up with a respectable 138744 points. We ran heavy games such as Dead Trigger 2 and Asphalt and we are happy to report that we didn’t find any lags or overheating scenarios during our gaming sessions.

The biggest selling point of the OPPO F7 is the camera functionality. The OPPO F7 takes amazing selfies and is also capable of shooting very good images from the rear camera under any lighting conditions. The phone comes packed with a 3400mAh battery which offers a day and a half worth of battery life. Since the F7 only comes with a microUSB port, fast charging is not an option.

If you love taking selfies, the OPPO F7 is the phone for you. We cannot stress enough the fact that it shoots some amazing selfies. The rear camera also takes very good images and videos. For a price of AED 1249, the OPPO F7 gets our seal of recommendation.
