“Many Companies Are Working Towards Increasing the Number of Women in Tech Roles”

Joelle Nehme, Dell Business Unit Manager for Gulf at Mindware, says women have been underrepresented in the IT and Telecom industry

Please share your career progression in the tech industry.
After completing my Telecom Engineering degree from ECE (Ecole Central d’Electronique), I began my career as a technical engineer at British Telecom in France. I later transitioned into Presales and Consulting roles in both France and Lebanon at SPIE and PwC, leveraging my expertise to deliver valuable solutions to clients. Eventually, I moved to the UAE and assumed a Channel Management role at Mindware, where I honed my skills in developing and managing relationships with partners and vendors. With over 14 years of experience spanning various industry fields, I have built a comprehensive understanding of the Tech industry and its various functions.

What is the current status in terms of women in the workforce in the IT and telecom sectors?
Historically, women have been underrepresented in the IT and Telecom industry. However, the extent of this underrepresentation can vary depending on the country, region, and specific subfield of the industry.

Reasons for women being underrepresented in the industry include gender stereotypes, discrimination, bias, lack of female role models and mentors, and limited access to education and career opportunities. Additionally, the tech industry is known for its long working hours and intense work culture, which may not be appealing or feasible for everyone.

However, in recent years, there have been efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in the technology industry, and some progress has been made. Many companies are now implementing programs to increase the number of women in technology roles, such as mentorship programs, diversity and inclusion training, and family-friendly policies. Additionally, there are now many high-profile women in leadership positions in the technology industry who serve as role models for other women.

Will Working from Home create more job opportunities for women?
It’s difficult to predict the future with certainty, but there is reason to believe that remote work and the increasing availability of flexible work arrangements may help to improve job opportunities for women in the coming years.

One of the main advantages of remote work is that it can help to level the playing field for women who may face challenges in accessing traditional office-based jobs due to factors such as childcare responsibilities, long commutes, or inflexible schedules. By working remotely, women can have more control over their work-life balance and may be better able to balance their professional and personal responsibilities.

In addition, the shift to remote work and the increased reliance on digital technologies may also create new job opportunities for women in fields such as technology, digital marketing, and e-commerce. These fields have traditionally been male-dominated, but the rise of remote work and the increasing demand for digital skills may help to open up new opportunities for women.

Overall, while the shift to remote work and the increasing availability of flexible work arrangements may help to improve job opportunities for women in certain sectors, more work needs to be done to ensure that women have equal access to all types of jobs and that they are able to succeed and advance in their careers on an equal footing with men.
