KIOXIA Begins Sampling UFS 4.1 Embedded Flash Memory Devices

KIOXIA Europe GmbH has announced it has begun sampling new Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Ver. 4.1 embedded memory devices. These new UFS devices incorporate KIOXIA’s 8th-generation BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory and are designed to offer improved performance and power efficiency for next-generation mobile applications, including advanced smartphones with on-device AI.

The 8th generation BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory introduces CBA (CMOS directly Bonded to Array) technology. This architectural innovation directly bonds the CMOS circuitry to the memory array, leading to gains in power efficiency, performance, and density. KIOXIA states that the UFS Ver. 4.1 devices are built to enhance user experiences through faster downloads and smoother app performance.

Key features of the new devices include:

  1. Availability in capacities of 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB.
  2. Performance improvements over the previous generation, with random writes for 512 GB/1 TB approximately 30% faster and random reads for 512 GB approximately 45% faster, and 1 TB approximately 35% faster.
  3. Power efficiency improvements over the previous generation, with reads for 512 GB/1 TB approximately 15% better and writes for 512 GB/1 TB approximately 20% better.
  4. Host Initiated Defragmentation for delayed garbage collection, aiming for uninterrupted performance during critical times.
  5. WriteBooster buffer resizing for flexible and optimal performance.
  6. Support for the UFS Ver. 4.1 standard.
  7. A reduced package height for the 1 TB model compared to the prior generation.
  8. Utilization of KIOXIA’s 8th generation BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory (for 512 GB / 1 TB models).

Axel Störmann, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Memory and SSD products at KIOXIA Europe GmbH, stated, “KIOXIA’s new UFS Ver. 4.1 embedded memory devices signify a notable advancement, reinforcing KIOXIA’s leadership in high-performance storage and its commitment to leading flash storage innovation. Engineered with 8th generation BiCS FLASHTM and CBA technology, these devices meet the demands of tomorrow’s next-generation mobile applications, including on-device AI, marking a significant leap forward from predecessors.”
