Red Hat Launches Enterprise Linux for Business Developers

Red Hat has introduced “Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Business Developers,” a new offering designed to simplify access to its enterprise Linux platform for business-focused development and testing. This self-service offering, available through the Red Hat Developer Program, provides no-cost access to the platform, aiming for greater consistency between development and production environments across hybrid cloud setups.

The initiative addresses the increasing complexity of IT, including the intermingling of applications across various deployments and the rise in software vulnerabilities and supply chain attacks. Red Hat states that a reliable and consistent platform is crucial for both production environments and developer workstations.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Business Developers offers self-serve access to a complete set of enterprise-ready Red Hat Enterprise Linux content for internal business use. This aims to provide consistency and reliability between developer and operations teams, regardless of the application’s final deployment location.

The offering includes:

  • Simplified access to the enterprise Linux platform, allowing registered users to entitle up to 25 physical, virtual, or cloud-based instances. This is intended to reduce friction with operations teams by enabling development on the same platform used for production workloads.
  • Curated and signed developer content, including open source application programming languages, tools, and databases.
  • Open source container tooling via Podman Desktop, providing developers with full access to Red Hat software components for development and testing, including the creation of bootable container images.

Users of Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Business Developers will have the option to purchase Red Hat Developer Support subscriptions. This allows developers, including those in lines of business, to more easily access Red Hat Enterprise Linux for new projects and build/test on a production-approved platform, facilitating the transition of applications to production and reducing friction between teams. This new offering complements existing developer options, such as the no-cost Red Hat Developer Subscription for Individuals (intended for personal use) and the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Developer Subscription for Teams (available to large enterprises through account representatives or partners).

Gunnar Hellekson, vice president and general manager, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat, commented, “Modern developers need to be able to move at their own pace to deliver innovative applications, but must do so without increasing friction with IT operations teams or production systems. Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Business Developers helps empower developers with direct access to the world’s leading enterprise Linux platform without having to move through centralized IT channels, giving them a more consistent, reliable foundation that aligns with the business’ demands for production-readiness.”
