R&M Launches Digitally Secured Door Handles for Data Centers

Swiss cabling and infrastructure specialist R&M has introduced a radio-based electromechanical locking solution for data center server and network racks. The core component is a battery-powered door handle for R&M’s BladeShelter and Freenet rack families that opens only with authorized RFID transponder cards and can be remotely managed over encrypted wireless networks.

Key features of the new system:

  • Completely wireless: no cabling required inside the racks
  • Battery life of up to 3 years or 30,000 locking cycles
  • Support for up to 1,200 handles per installation
  • Centralized management software for user rights, access logging, alarm visualization, and integration with DCIM platforms
  • Secure, encrypted radio communication between handles, control modules, and transponder cards

The solution is based on EMKA’s “Agent E” intelligent locking platform and marks the latest addition to R&M’s strategy of integrating best-of-breed partner technologies into its end-to-end data center infrastructure portfolio. R&M already collaborates with Stulz (cooling) and Socomec (power systems) under the same partner model.

Targeted at on-premise, edge, and colocation data center operators, the new wireless access control system is immediately available in Europe and further strengthens physical security in an increasingly critical infrastructure environment.
