Oman Moves to Roll Out Integrated Digital Ticketing System for Public Transport

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has invited private sector companies and investors to develop and operate a unified digital ticketing platform for the Sultanate’s public transport network, marking a significant step in the country’s push toward smarter mobility.
The proposed system aims to replace fragmented and largely traditional ticketing methods with a seamless, integrated electronic platform that can support multiple modes of public transport across Oman. Under the initiative, specialised firms will be tasked with designing a solution capable of handling ticket sales through a range of digital channels, including mobile applications, smart cards, and online portals, while ensuring a smooth and consistent passenger experience.
Beyond convenience, the platform is expected to deliver substantial operational benefits. By centralising ticketing data, the system will enable real-time monitoring of passenger flows, route performance, and demand patterns. This data-driven approach will support more informed decision-making, helping authorities optimise routes, improve service efficiency, and plan future transport infrastructure investments.
The initiative forms part of Oman’s broader strategy to digitise its transport ecosystem and align with national goals for economic diversification and smart city development. As urbanisation accelerates and public transport demand grows, integrated ticketing is increasingly seen as a critical enabler of efficient, user-friendly mobility systems.
According to the ministry, tender documents for the project will be available until 10 May 2026, with a final submission deadline set for 5 July 2026. The selected partner will be responsible not only for deploying the platform but also for its long-term operation and maintenance, ensuring scalability and adaptability as the transport network evolves.
MTCIT has also underscored the importance of compliance with Oman’s Land Transport Law throughout the project lifecycle. This includes ensuring high standards of safety, data security, and service reliability, as well as supporting the sustainable development of the organised transport sector.
The move reflects a wider regional trend, with governments across the Gulf investing in intelligent transport systems to enhance commuter experience, reduce congestion, and build more connected urban environments. For Oman, the integrated ticketing platform represents a foundational step toward a fully digital, efficient, and future-ready public transport network.
