WSO2 Opens First Africa Office in Johannesburg as Regional Digital Modernisation Accelerates

WSO2, an enterprise digital infrastructure technology provider, has opened its first office in Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa, as the company expands its presence in a region where organisations are increasingly investing in legacy modernisation, digital services and AI infrastructure.
The new office represents the next phase of WSO2’s expansion across the continent. The company said it plans to establish a presence in additional markets across East, West and North Africa over the coming years, supported by local partnerships and regional expertise.
The announcement comes ahead of WSO2Con Africa, which will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from September 22 to 24. It is the first time the company’s flagship technology conference will be held on the continent, with discussions expected to focus on digital modernisation, integration, digital sovereignty and agentic AI.
“Africa isn’t a peripheral market for WSO2. It’s one of the fastest-growing parts of our business, and this office launch reflects our long-term commitment to the region,” said Dinal Gooneratne, WSO2’s Vice President and General Manager for Africa. “Organizations across the continent are moving from experimentation to execution. Establishing a permanent presence in Johannesburg allows us to work more closely with customers and partners as they modernize critical systems and adopt AI at scale.”
According to WSO2, its African business has recorded approximately 30% year-on-year revenue growth over the past two years. Its customer base in the region has grown from around 40 organisations to more than 65, while its footprint has expanded to 25 countries, including recent growth in Benin, Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire.
Government and public-sector organisations have been an important part of that expansion. WSO2 technology is used by organisations including Uganda’s National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U), Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum & Mineral Resources, the Government of Malawi, the Kenya Revenue Authority, the Uganda Revenue Authority and Lesotho Revenue Services to support digital services for citizens and businesses.
The company said its growth in Africa is being driven by increasing demand for digital services, investment in modernising legacy systems and the need for infrastructure capable of supporting AI initiatives while maintaining security and governance.
WSO2’s open-source platform can be deployed across cloud, on-premises and hybrid environments. The company said this flexibility is increasingly relevant as organisations across Africa consider digital sovereignty, data control and the use of open standards. These issues have also featured in emerging technology policy discussions across the region, including Kenya’s recently unveiled draft AI policy.
WSO2 also plans to expand its network of regional partners as it increases its investment in the continent, with the aim of providing more local expertise and support. “WSO2’s decision to establish a permanent presence in Johannesburg sends a strong signal to the market. We’ve seen firsthand how its open-source, API-first approach enables organizations to modernize and digitally transform into and within the new interconnected business ecosystems. Having WSO2 on the ground will accelerate collaboration and deliver even greater value for our shared customers,” said Steven Grundlingh, Business Development Executive at DeARX.
Shailendra Yadav, CEO at Sybyl Kenya, said the company’s investment could also support growing public-sector interest in digital sovereignty and open standards. “As governments and financial institutions across Africa increasingly prioritize data sovereignty and open standards, WSO2 is well positioned to support those ambitions. This investment strengthens our confidence in bringing WSO2 into more public-sector engagements across the region,” he said.
WSO2Con Africa will bring together business and technology leaders in Nairobi from September 22 to 24, with sessions covering digital modernisation, AI agents, integration and digital governance, alongside customer experiences and hands-on workshops.
