Egypt Expands Digital Services for Citizens Abroad with Sahl Bill Payment Platform

Egypt has launched a new digital bill payment service through the Sahl application, allowing Egyptians living overseas to pay utility and government-related bills remotely without needing to be physically present in the country. The initiative is aimed at making it easier for Egyptians abroad to manage domestic financial and administrative obligations while reducing reliance on intermediaries and in-person transactions.

Through the Sahl platform, overseas citizens can securely settle eligible bills from outside Egypt, extending access to digital public services beyond the country’s borders. The move forms part of Egypt’s wider digital transformation programme, which is focused on modernising government services and making them more accessible regardless of where citizens are located.

Governments are increasingly using digital platforms to provide citizens with access to essential services from anywhere in the world. For diaspora communities, online government services can remove geographical barriers and simplify tasks that traditionally require physical visits or third-party assistance. The expansion of cross-border digital services is becoming an important element of national digital transformation strategies, particularly as governments seek to improve engagement with citizens living overseas.

The integration of digital payments into government and utility services is also helping streamline interactions between citizens and public institutions. Mobile-based payment platforms can reduce manual processing, speed up transactions and improve transparency while supporting wider financial inclusion efforts. For Egypt, extending these capabilities to citizens abroad could provide a more convenient way to manage payments while strengthening their digital connection with public services at home.

The Sahl initiative builds on Egypt’s broader investments in digital government, fintech and citizen-focused digital services. The country has been expanding online platforms designed to simplify access to public services and encourage greater participation in the digital economy.

Providing these services to Egyptians overseas also supports stronger economic and administrative ties with the country’s diaspora, enabling citizens to remain connected to essential services without geographical constraints. As more governments adopt mobile-first approaches to public service delivery, Egypt’s latest initiative highlights the growing role of digital platforms in connecting nations with citizens beyond their borders.
