Huawei’s new FreeBuds 4 offers a boatload of features at a very attractive price point. These are a pair of True Wireless Stereo (TWS) Bluetooth earbuds that offer an open-fit active noise cancellation (ANC) 2.0 technology. The earbuds are also built to offer studio-quality sound, while also being comfortable to be worn for an extended period of time. The FreeBuds 4 is also compatible with Android and iOS – all you need to do is download the Huawei AI Life app to adjust settings or perform various controls such as wear detection, quick control, status query, noise cancelation, and device management.
In terms of design, Huawei has further refined the overall construction of the earbuds, making them thinner and lighter than those seen on the FreeBuds 4i. Colour options include Ceramic White and Silver Frost. We got the latter variant for this review. Having said that, the earbuds are very comfortable to wear. Usually, my ears feel sore if the earbuds do not come with a silicon tip. However, having worn the FreeBuds 4 for an extended period of time, I am glad to say, I did not encounter any soreness.
In addition, the earbuds also did not pop out of the ears when doing sudden movements or being active. So, they would also meet your needs if you are into activities such as outdoor runs and workouts. The moment you flip open the charging case, the earbuds get into pairing mode, pairing instantly if you own a Huawei phone.
For other smartphones, you just go through the normal Bluetooth pairing procedure. In any case, the charging case also includes a small button, which when pressed, activates the Bluetooth pairing mode.
The Huawei FreeBuds 4 uses a Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) composite diaphragm that supports a frequency range of up to 40 kHz to deliver high resolution sound. The earbuds also accompany 14.3mm dynamic drivers that help to boost the overall audio performance. The FreeBuds 4 also feature Adaptive Ear Matching (AEM) technology. This means it automatically detects your ear’s shape and wearing condition, to optimise the overall audio performance.
The FreeBuds 4 also comes packed with the dual-microphone hybrid denoising technology, which helps to improve noise cancelation. These microphones can accurately pick up ambient noise, while also avoiding wind noise interference. This means the earbuds can cancel out up to 25 dB of noise when noise cancellation mode is turned on.
And if you want to use the FreeBuds 4 during your gaming sessions, you won’t be disappointed with the overall performance. The earbuds offer a Low Latency Mode, which uses a new game audio coding that can achieve a delay of 150ms in-game and can go as low as 90ms when the shooting action and sound are in sync. The earbuds also feature intuitive controls for playback and calls.
Tap twice on the stem of the HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 to answer/reject a call, play/pause music, play previous/next song, and enable voice assistant. You can also swipe up and down the stem of the earbuds to control the volume.
A long press will enable or disable noise cancelation. In addition, if you remove one of the earbuds from your ears, the music will automatically pause and it will resume the moment you put the earbud back into your ear.
The earbuds did an incredible job when it came to audio quality. The highs, mids, and lows are very crystal clear. The bass performance was also on point. I was also impressed by the active noise cancellation on the earbuds – they did a very good job of keeping the outside noise isolated.
The Huawei FreeBuds 4 also performs really well in phone calls. The call quality was good and the person on the other side of the call was able to hear me clearly, too.
In terms of battery life, we clocked around 4 hours’ worth before the earbuds needed to recharge. The charging case offers four full charges before you need to connect it to a charger via the USB-C port.
For a price of AED 569, you get a really good pair of true wireless stereo Bluetooth earbuds that offer some premium features such as ANC, Low Latency Mode for gaming, and intuitive touch controls. The Huawei FreeBuds 4 is a pair of premium open-fit earbuds that offer impressive sound and very good ANC performance.
