OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work AI Agent

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Work, a new AI-powered workspace designed to help professionals complete complex, multi-step projects by connecting directly to workplace applications, files, and data. Powered by the company’s latest GPT-5.6 model, the new offering aims to transform ChatGPT from a conversational assistant into an autonomous work partner capable of managing tasks across documents, spreadsheets, presentations, code, and business workflows.
AI That Works Across Business Applications
Unlike traditional chatbots that respond to individual prompts, ChatGPT Work is designed to execute long-running tasks, maintain project context, and take action across connected enterprise tools. Users can link applications such as Gmail, Google Drive, Slack, Microsoft services, customer relationship management (CRM) platforms, and internal knowledge bases, enabling the AI agent to retrieve information, analyse data, generate content, and complete workflows from a single interface.
The platform can draft reports, create presentations, build spreadsheets, generate web applications, review code, conduct research, and automate repetitive business processes. It also incorporates OpenAI’s Codex capabilities, allowing technical and non-technical users alike to work on software development and data analysis projects without switching between multiple tools.
Powered by GPT-5.6
At the heart of ChatGPT Work is GPT-5.6, OpenAI’s latest flagship AI model, which delivers improved reasoning, coding, research, and instruction-following capabilities. According to the company, the model has been optimised for enterprise use, balancing intelligence with cost efficiency while supporting extended workflows that may continue for hours before delivering completed outputs.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Work can break large projects into smaller tasks, coordinate information from multiple sources, and continue making progress while users focus on other work, bringing AI closer to functioning as a collaborative digital teammate rather than a simple assistant.
Enterprise Focus
The launch represents OpenAI’s strongest push yet into enterprise productivity software, positioning ChatGPT Work as a unified platform that combines conversational AI, coding assistance, automation, and document creation. The product is intended to reduce the need for employees to move between separate productivity, collaboration, and development applications.
Initially, ChatGPT Work is available through the ChatGPT desktop application, with support for Mac and Windows. Web and mobile availability is being rolled out to Pro, Enterprise, Edu, Plus, and Business users in phases.
Intensifying Competition in Enterprise AI
The introduction of ChatGPT Work comes as competition in enterprise AI continues to accelerate. Technology companies are increasingly developing AI agents capable of executing tasks autonomously rather than simply generating text. OpenAI’s latest offering competes directly with similar workplace AI platforms while expanding the company’s strategy of embedding AI into everyday professional workflows.
By combining connected applications, autonomous task execution, and advanced reasoning in a single platform, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT Work as a comprehensive AI workspace aimed at helping organisations improve productivity, automate routine work, and accelerate knowledge-intensive tasks.
