UiPath has announced UiPath Cartographer, a new product designed to create a structured and continuously updated view of how enterprise processes operate. The company said Cartographer builds what it calls a Map of Work, bringing together process information that may otherwise be spread across documents, spreadsheets, systems and employee knowledge. The map is intended to provide a reference for designing and implementing workflows, agents and automations.
According to UiPath, organisations often have detailed records of business data but less structured information about how that data is used in day-to-day operations. This can include process rules, exceptions and decisions made by employees when standard procedures do not apply.
Cartographer is designed to capture this information through guided conversations and by bringing together relevant documents, process steps, rules and exceptions. The resulting Map of Work can then be used to identify areas for process changes and support the development of automation and AI initiatives.
The map is governed by a designated owner who reviews and approves changes. UiPath said this is intended to ensure that changes to the documented process do not occur automatically.
From process mapping to implementation
UiPath said Cartographer can generate design documentation and specifications from the Map of Work, allowing teams to use the resulting information when developing agents, workflows and automations on the UiPath Platform.
The product offers three approaches to building process maps. Prebuilt Maps are based on processes covered by UiPath’s existing industry and functional solutions, including areas such as loan origination, healthcare claims review and source-to-pay.
Process Atlas provides a library of process maps covering more complex workflows across industries. UiPath said these maps include information such as case plans, key performance indicators, benchmarks, policies and rules. The third option, Build Your Own, allows organisations to capture processes that are specific to their own operations and use the resulting map as a blueprint for implementation.
Once workflows and agents have been developed, they can be orchestrated through UiPath Maestro, the company’s orchestration platform. UiPath said the platform provides governance and visibility across the workflow.
Cartographer also works with the company’s Decision Ledger, which records decisions made during a process and the reasoning behind them. These decisions can subsequently be reviewed and incorporated into the Map of Work as operating knowledge or new rules.
UiPath said the approach is intended to create a feedback loop in which information captured during process execution can be reviewed and used to update the underlying process map.
“Businesses have digitised their data without ever capturing the enterprise context of how that data is actually put to work,” said Daniel Dines, founder and CEO of UiPath. “A process map tells you how work is designed to run. UiPath Cartographer is the key to uncovering the operational knowledge of how that work actually runs, with every exception and every judgment call included.”
Cartographer runs on the UiPath Platform and therefore uses the platform’s existing identity, security and governance controls, according to the company.
