KIOXIA Intros 8th Gen BiCS FLASH NVMe SSDs for Max AI/HPC GPU Performance

KIOXIA Europe GmbH, a global leader in memory solutions, has announced the prototype development of its new KIOXIA CD9P Series PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs. These cutting-edge SSDs are built with KIOXIA’s 8th generation BiCS FLASH TLC-based 3D flash memory, featuring the breakthrough CBA (CMOS directly Bonded to Array) technology. This architecture significantly boosts power efficiency, performance, and storage density, effectively doubling the capacity per SSD compared to the previous generation.

As AI, machine learning (ML), and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads increasingly demand robust storage infrastructure to keep GPUs fully utilized, the CD9P Series is purpose-built to deliver the necessary speed and responsiveness. The CD9P Series leverages KIOXIA’s most advanced 3D flash memory to date. Its CBA-based design reduces heat generation and enhances thermal management, offering improved performance and power metrics that translate to greater overall value and lower total cost of ownership.

Key Performance Improvements (vs. previous generation):

  • Random Write: Up to ~125% faster
  • Random Read: Up to ~30% faster
  • Sequential Read: Up to ~20% faster
  • Sequential Write: Up to ~25% faster
  • Performance per Watt:
  • Sequential Read: ~60% improvement
  • Sequential Write: ~45% improvement
  • Random Read: ~55% improvement
  • Random Write: ~100% (2x) improvement (applies to 15.36TB model)

KIOXIA CD9P Series Highlights (Preliminary):

  • Interface: PCIe 5.0, NVMe 2.0, NVMe-MI 1.2c compliant
  • Form Factors: 2.5-inch (15 mm thickness), EDSFF E3.S
  • Endurances: Read-intensive (1 DWPD) and Mixed-use (3 DWPD)
  • Sequential Performance (128 KiB/QD32): 14.8 GB/s Read, 7 GB/s Write
  • Random Performance (4KiB): 2,600 KIOPS Read (QD512), 750 KIOPS Write (QD32)
  • Capacities: Up to 61.44 TB (2.5-inch), up to 30.72 TB (E3.S)
  • Security: CNSA 2.0 algorithm support (quantum-computing threat ready)

Axel Stoermann, VP and CTO for Embedded Memory and SSD at KIOXIA Europe GmbH, stated, “Achieving power efficiency while addressing the increasing demand for data processing in AI, machine learning, and HPC is the most pressing issue today. KIOXIA is addressing this need with the CD9P Series, delivering a leading power-efficient, high-performance solution for high workloads and optimum operation.”

KIOXIA CD9P Series SSDs are currently sampling to select customers and will be showcased at HPE Discover 2025 (June 23–26 in Las Vegas).
