Cloudflare Launches Basin, a Serverless Data Platform Designed to Eliminate Egress Fees and Vendor Lock-In

Cloudflare has announced the general availability of Cloudflare Basin, an open, serverless data platform designed to let engineering teams ingest, store, catalog, and query analytical data at scale without managing dedicated infrastructure or paying cloud egress penalties.

Engineered directly on Apache Iceberg and Cloudflare R2 object storage, Basin targets the cost and complexity barriers that typically define modern data stacks. By decoupling analytical data from proprietary cloud silos, the platform allows engineering teams to run high-performance analytics using standard query engines without data copying or format conversion.

“Developers shouldn’t need to become data infrastructure operators just to answer questions from their own data,” said Dane Knecht, CTO at Cloudflare. “With Cloudflare Basin, we are bringing the same serverless model that developers expect from Cloudflare to analytics: no clusters to manage, no unnecessary data movement, and open standards that keep customers in control of their data.”

Key Technical Capabilities

  • Open-Format Architecture: Data is written and stored in Apache Iceberg, an industry-standard open table format. Teams retain complete data ownership and can access datasets directly using any compatible analytics engine, preventing proprietary lock-in.
  • Serverless Compute on Global Edge: Operating natively across Cloudflare’s distributed edge network, Basin handles data ingestion, organization, and query workloads on demand, removing the need to provision or size compute clusters ahead of traffic surges.
  • Zero Egress Overhead: Leveraging Cloudflare R2’s pricing model, Basin eliminates data transfer and egress fees when querying across external clouds, platforms, or geographical regions.

Production Adoption
Early adopters report immediate reductions in operational overhead and pipeline latency. “We moved our entire company’s data pipeline to Basin Pipelines, Catalog, and SQL,” said Dax Raad, co-founder of Anomaly, creators of open-source AI coding agent OpenCode. “We replaced a complex AWS S3 and Athena setup with a cleaner, serverless architecture that reliably handles all of our event data.”

“Bobsled is a data product platform that the world’s most advanced data teams use to build and distribute AI-ready data to partners, vendors and customers,” said Julien Grobbelaar, Head of Platform at Bobsled. “Basin allows us to build data products that can be made accessible in any region of every major data and AI platform, all at production-grade reliability and a fraction of the cost thanks to zero egress fees.”

Cloudflare Basin is generally available worldwide starting today.
