Review: HUAWEI MateBook X Pro (2022)

In recent years, the demand for lightweight, high-performance laptops has been increasing. Users are craving portable laptops to satisfy their needs for mobile work – whether they’re working in open areas, on the road, or on business trips. In addition, they also value display quality, as well as the laptop’s performance to ensure it copes with the heavy workload on-hand.

Taking this into consideration, HUAWEI has just announced its new MateBook X Pro to the regional market that answers the very same issues mobile professionals face today. The MateBook X Pro features a top-notch design and a solid build quality. It is available in two different variants when it comes to the laptop’s chassis. There’s a space grey variant with an aluminium body, while this ink blue variant, which we have reviewed here is made using a magnesium alloy chassis. The laptop also weighs just 1.26-kgs.

Inside the box, you get the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro, a 90 W USB-C Power Adapter, a USB-C Charger Cable, a HUAWEI USB-C OTG Cable, a Quick Start Guide, and the Warranty Card. Upon opening the lid, you come face to face with a 14.2-inches LTPS screen that offers a resolution of 3120-by-2080 pixels and a pixel density of 264-PPI.

You get a screen-to-body ratio of 92.5%, an aspect ratio of 3:2, and a 90-Hz refresh rate. In addition, the display offers a maximum brightness of 500 nits, 100% coverage of the P3 colour gamut, a contrast ratio of 1500:1, and a viewing angle of 178 degrees.

Just above the display, you will find a 720P camera for your video conferencing requirements. The MateBook X Pro comes with a full-size backlit chiclet keyboard, which offers a brilliant 1.5 mm key travel that makes for a satisfying typing experience. The power button meanwhile also doubles up as a fingerprint scanner.

The HUAWEI Free Touch touchpad has some tricks up its sleeve. Sliding up and down on the left edge of the touchpad controls the brightness while sliding up and down on the right edge of the touchpad controls the volume. Sliding left and right on the top edge of the touchpad will allow you to fast-forward or rewind a video.

In addition, you can take a screenshot by clicking with one finger on the touchpad, while clicking once with two fingers on the touchpad would start a screen recording session. The touch experience is comfortable to use because the surface of the touchpad is covered by a piece of glass. In addition, the Air gestures are now available in the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro, supporting three gestures. These include air scroll left and right, air scroll up and down, and air press.

In terms of audio performance, the MateBook X Pro is HUAWEI Sound certified and comes packed with six speakers and four microphones. When it comes to the I/O ports, you get two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left edge, two USB-C ports on the right edge and a 3.5 mm headset and microphone combo jack.

Since HUAWEI also bundles a Type-C to Type-A dongle, you can use regular USB drives with the laptop. Wireless connectivity support includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. The laptop also derives its power from a 60 Wh battery.

Under the hood, the MateBook X Pro comes packed with a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-1260P Processor, which is based on the new EVO architecture. You also get 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, and 1TB of NVMe PCIe SSD storage. Graphics are handled by Intel Iris Xe Graphics.

The MateBook X Pro also supports HUAWEI’s multiscreen collaboration technology. By tapping the MateBook X Pro icon, you can activate the Multi-screen Collaboration. You can edit phone files directly on your laptop by using the PC software and the display. In order to use this feature, however, you will need to log in with your HUAWEI ID on the PC Manager app on the MateBook X Pro.

With Super Device and Multi-Screen Collaboration, you can increase productivity with very minimal effort. You can freely connect different devices as required and use them as if you were using a single device. The overall performance of the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro is very good. Battery life was also quite good and if you do see yourself running out of battery, you can take the advantage of the 90W Super-Fast Charging technology.

If you are a mobile professional who is always on the move and are looking for an ultra-light laptop with excellent performance, you cannot go wrong with the HUAWEI Matebook X Pro. It offers an outstanding display, fast charging capabilities, good battery performance, excellent specs, brilliant sound and some standout features that make your hybrid working experience, a breeze.
