Veeam Unveils Cloud Archive Tier to Simplify Long-Term Data Retention

Veeam Software has announced the general availability of Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive, a new archival-class cloud tier designed to help organisations reduce the cost of long-term backup retention while maintaining security, compliance and recoverability.

The latest addition to the Veeam Data Cloud Vault family enables businesses to move older, rarely accessed backup data from premium storage to a lower-cost archive tier. It is aimed at helping organisations address growing data volumes and increasingly stringent regulatory requirements by providing secure, immutable and residency-aware long-term storage.

As organisations generate and retain more data, including aged, inactive and infrequently accessed backups, storing everything on high-performance storage has become increasingly expensive. Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive is designed to complete the backup data lifecycle by automatically tiering older backups, large unstructured datasets and redundant, obsolete or trivial (ROT) data to archive-class storage, while keeping recovery-critical backups on performance-optimised Veeam Data Cloud Vault.

According to Veeam, backup archives are increasingly becoming a critical component of cyber resilience and compliance strategies. The company cites its research showing that backup repositories are targeted in 96% of ransomware attacks, while 58% of organisations consider data residency and sovereignty the most important factors when determining where data should be stored.

Built to address these challenges, Veeam Vault Archive offers immutable, logically air-gapped and encrypted archive storage with customer-controlled data placement and predictable long-term retention costs.

Working with Veeam Data Platform v13.1, the solution enables organisations to automatically tier older backups, archive large unstructured datasets such as NAS backups, and scan backup data to verify clean restore points before long-term retention.

Key capabilities include:

  1. Moving redundant, obsolete, trivial and other cold backup data from premium storage to archive-class cloud storage.
  2. Providing immutable, encrypted and logically air-gapped archive storage.
  3. Supporting customer-controlled encryption key management.
  4. Helping organisations meet long-term compliance requirements with immutable retention, flexible data placement and recovery to alternate locations.
  5. Supporting Veeam’s 3-2-1-1-0 data protection rule through an immutable, logically air-gapped archive copy.
  6. Enabling policy-based tiering from Veeam Data Cloud Vault to Veeam Vault Archive.
  7. Offering a cloud-based alternative to tape for long-term retention.
  8. Simplifying the archiving of large unstructured datasets, including NAS backups.

The company positions Veeam Vault Archive as a modern replacement for tape-based backup, eliminating the operational challenges associated with physical media, including transportation, offsite storage, delayed recovery and ongoing management overhead. Instead, organisations gain a fully managed cloud archive that is secure by default while remaining accessible when needed.

Veeam Vault Archive is available alongside Veeam Data Platform v13.1, which also introduces features such as NAS Direct to Archive and expanded threat detection for NAS and cloud workloads. Together, these capabilities are designed to help organisations archive verified clean data and strengthen their long-term recovery strategy.
