Review: Epson L3070

Epson is a company that has been at the forefront of developing ITS – Ink Tank System – printers. The reason the company came out with such a series of printers was to offer an economical printing solution for home and office users. The L3070 is one such device that offers a 3-in-1 functionality, in that, it is a printer, scanner and copier.

The overall design and build quality are quite good, typical of what you would expect from an Epson device. Dressed in all-black and made of high-grade plastic, the body feels durable. The printer itself is a bit broader in size since it is equipped with an ink tank system, which is situated on the right of the printer.

Setting up the printer is a breeze – all you need to do is fill the ink tanks with the ink bottles that come with the printer, switch on the printer for it to set up the device and charge the inks, connect it wirelessly to your PC and you are all set to go. The setup itself takes a couple of minutes, though the charging of inks takes a while. During this process, the ink charges the Micro Piezo printheads of the printer.

On the front of the device, you get a control panel with a 3.7cm LED screen and a bunch of buttons next to it to perform various functions. The L3070 also comes packed with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct. So you can print documents from smartphones and tablets using the free Epson iPrint4 app. The printer can even receive files from almost anywhere in the world via Epson Email Print4 to print them out.

I tested out the iPrint4 and the Print4 applications and they worked like a charm. On paper, Epson claims print speeds of 33 pages/min on monochrome and 15 pages/min on colour. During our tests, we were able to clock 30 ppm on monochrome mode, and 13 ppm on colour mode. For printing out a 10 X 15 cm photo, the Epson L3070 took about 29 seconds to complete the job.

The quality of the outputs was really good. The Epson L3070 can be a serious cost-cutter when it comes to saving up on printing costs. This is especially true for households with school-going kids where the need for printing out assignments and so on comes into play.
