Review: ASUS ZenBook S 13 OLED (UX5304)

ASUS has revamped its compact 13-inch ZenBook S 13 ultrabook, with a focus on creating an even lighter and slimmer device. According to the company, this is now the slimmest 13.3-inch OLED ultrabook in the world. Along with this redesign, ASUS has replaced last year’s AMD processor with a current Raptor Lake chip from Intel.

The new design of the ASUS ZenBook S 13 is a departure from the simpler chassis and multitude of offered colors of the previous model. Instead, it features a redesigned implementation of the ASUS monogram logo that now covers the entire lid. The laptop is available in either a dark blue or gray variant, with our unit being the Basalt Gray version.

What sets this model apart is the finish on the lid, which, according to ASUS, has a “plasma ceramisation coating made via a plasma electrolytic oxidation process.” This finish is more durable and environmentally friendly than the anodised aluminum used in previous ZenBooks. It also does an excellent job of hiding smudges and fingerprints, making it a low-maintenance design.

In addition to its sleek appearance, the ZenBook S 13 is also built to last. The strong alluminium pieces used for the entire case, including the main chassis, the thicker bottom panel, and metal bezels, provide excellent durability. The lid is also sturdy and doesn’t flex or bend in any notable way. Furthermore, the chassis meets US MIL-STD-810H military-grade standards of toughness and reliability.

The ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED boasts a slim and lightweight design while packing a powerful punch with its 13th Gen Intel Core i7 1355U processor, up to 16 GB of LPDDR 5200 memory, and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD. For seamless connectivity, the laptop features two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a standard HDMI 2.1, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, and a combo audio jack. With these options, you can expect exceptional performance and versatility. Additionally, the 63-watt-hour battery provides ample power to last throughout the day.

The Zenbook S 13 OLED series was developed in collaboration with Intel and is certified as an Intel Evo laptop. This certification ensures that the laptop meets specific hardware requirements and experience benchmarks to provide exceptional mobile performance, such as instant wake, speedy WiFi connectivity, and long-lasting battery life.

The ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED boasts a 13.3-inch OLED HDR NanoEdge display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2880-by-1800 pixels, providing you with an exceptional visual experience. This OLED display offers a high contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, peak brightness of up to 550 nits, and 0.0005 nits of deep black brightness, resulting in vivid and detailed visuals for creators.

The display also supports an ultrawide colour gamut of 100% DCI-P3, HDR content, and is certified as VESA DisplayHDR 500 True Black, Dolby Vision, and Pantone Validated, ensuring precise color reproduction and dynamic contrast. ASUS’s OLED displays are highly reliable and provide long-lasting quality and comfort due to their TUV low blue light certification, ASUS OLED Care burn-in prevention, and US military-grade durability. Additionally, ASUS offers a free OLED screen exchange during the warranty period for any burn-in issues.

The hinges on the ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED are sturdy enough to allow for single-handed adjustments and even the option to lay the display flat at 180 degrees. The front edges and lips of the laptop are designed with a smooth, rounded finish that is gentle on the wrists. Additionally, there are no distracting lights within the line of sight, not even a light on the power key, as seen on older ZenBook models.

Over the past few days, I have been using the Zenbook S 13 OLED for my daily work tasks and I’m pleased to report that it performed really well and met my expectations. I used it for Zoom calls while running on battery, as well as having multiple Chrome tabs open and running basic Photoshop editing. Although I felt some warmth on the bottom of the device, the palm rests and keyboard deck remained cool, and the fan was generally quiet.

It’s worth noting that the laptop is equipped with an Intel Core i7-1335U processor and an integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics processor. With this kind of specs, you will also be able to create content such as videos while on the move and also indulge in some gaming sessions running less demanding games such as Counter-Strike, League of Legends, and even Shadow of the Tomb Raider at lower settings.

The ZenBook S 13 keyboard bears a resemblance to its predecessor, featuring a full-sized layout that offers a decent typing experience. The keyboard deck around the keys has a distinctly darker shade, constructed from a magnesium-aluminum alloy instead of the CNC alluminium used for the rest of the chassis. The keys and deck are nearly the same colour, while the rest of the body is a lighter gray hue.

One significant difference to note is the keyboard’s stroke depth, which is only 1.0 mm, shallower than the 1.4 mm keyboard on the previous S 13 and most other ZenBook models, as well as many keyboards in rival devices. However, the keyboard offers a satisfying typing experience.

The ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED undoubtedly earns my recommendation due to its sleek design, outstanding build quality, and impressive specifications for this category of laptop. While there are some minor details that I would nitpick, such as the small size of the left “Ctrl” key and the absence of a physical privacy cover for the webcam, these are primarily my own preferences.

The image quality of the OLED display is excellent, with highly accurate colour reproduction straight out of the box. What’s more, Asus is currently the sole manufacturer that provides a software solution to eliminate harmful PWM flickering, enabling DC dimming even at low brightness levels.

Overall, the Zenbook S 13 OLED is an excellent laptop that can compete with many thin and light ultrabooks on the market in terms of both performance and design.
