HONOR Pad X9b Max Review

The tablet has evolved well beyond being a device for watching videos and browsing the web. Increasingly, buyers expect a tablet to handle emails, documents, video calls, entertainment, reading and even some light gaming, while still being easier to carry around than a laptop.

The HONOR Pad X9b Max is clearly designed around that idea. Its 13-inch 2.5K display, 120Hz refresh rate, 10,100mAh battery, 45W charging, four-speaker audio system and expandable storage give it the foundations of a versatile everyday device. It also runs MagicOS 10.0 based on Android 16 and supports a range of productivity-focused features.

What makes the Pad X9b Max interesting, however, is not any single specification. The appeal comes from how those components work together. This is a tablet designed to be used for long periods, whether that means working on documents during the day, reading in the afternoon or watching a film in the evening.

Design
The 13-inch form factor immediately gives the Pad X9b Max a different character from smaller tablets. There is substantially more space to work with, which becomes particularly useful when browsing websites, reading documents or using productivity applications.

HONOR has kept the bezels relatively restrained, resulting in an 88 per cent screen-to-body ratio. The emphasis is clearly on the display, and that makes sense for a tablet where much of the interaction happens through the screen.

There is, inevitably, a trade-off. A 13-inch tablet is not something you will want to hold in one hand for hours. It feels more natural on a desk, lap or stand, particularly when being used with a keyboard. That larger footprint is actually an advantage when the tablet is being treated as a productivity device.

The different editions also give buyers some flexibility. HONOR offers configurations with an inbox cover or keyboard depending on the version, while the company positions the tablet as supporting PC-level productivity and file management.

That makes the Pad X9b Max feel less like a supersized smartphone and more like a compact work and entertainment machine.

Display
The display is arguably the biggest reason to consider the Pad X9b Max. HONOR has equipped it with a 13-inch LCD panel with a 2500 x 1560 resolution, 228ppi pixel density, 120Hz refresh rate and claimed peak brightness of 700 nits. The panel can display up to 1.07 billion colours when compatible 10-bit content is being used.

At this size, the 2.5K resolution makes a meaningful difference. Text looks sharp, photographs retain plenty of detail and websites are comfortable to read without everything appearing oversized. The additional screen space is particularly useful for documents and webpages, where you can see more information without constantly scrolling.

Then there is the 120Hz refresh rate. Scrolling through long articles, moving between menus and navigating applications all feel noticeably smoother. It is one of those features that can appear unnecessary on paper but becomes difficult to give up once you have used it for a while.

Colour reproduction is also an important part of the experience. HONOR states that the display supports 1.07 billion colours through an 8-bit hardware panel combined with a 2-bit software algorithm extension, with the expanded colour capability applying to compatible 10-bit content.

For everyday browsing, reading, video and general tablet use, the combination of size, resolution and refresh rate makes the display one of the Pad X9b Max’s most convincing features.

The same characteristics that make the display useful for productivity also make it particularly well suited to entertainment. A 13-inch screen provides considerably more visual impact than a smartphone, while the 2.5K resolution helps maintain clarity across films, television shows, photographs and YouTube content.

HONOR has also included IMAX Enhanced support, with compatible content benefiting from the format’s larger 1.9:1 presentation, brighter highlights and emphasis on detail and colour. The audio system complements the screen rather well. Four speakers are built into the tablet, with support for Hi-Res Audio, Hi-Res Audio Wireless and DTS Ultra.

That combination turns the Pad X9b Max into a very capable personal entertainment device. Dialogue comes through clearly, while music and films benefit from having four speakers rather than the basic audio arrangement found on many affordable tablets. It is also a good example of why the larger screen makes sense. The Pad X9b Max is big enough to create an immersive viewing experience while remaining considerably easier to move around than a laptop.

Performance
The Snapdragon 685 processor tells you quite a lot about where this tablet sits in the market. It is a mid-range mobile platform rather than a flagship processor, and the Pad X9b Max should be approached with that in mind. HONOR offers the tablet with 4GB or 6GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage, depending on the configuration.

For everyday workloads, the hardware is sensibly matched to the product. Browsing, email, document editing, streaming, social media, reading and ordinary multitasking are the sort of activities the tablet is designed to handle. The 120Hz display also helps the overall experience feel more responsive. Interface animations and scrolling have a fluidity that makes the tablet feel more polished than its processor specification might initially suggest.

Heavy workloads are a different matter. This is not a tablet designed to compete with premium models for demanding 3D gaming, intensive video editing or other processor-heavy applications. Users who need that level of performance should look higher up the tablet market. For everyday use, though, the Pad X9b Max is more about consistency than raw speed. It has enough power for the tasks most people are likely to perform on a large Android tablet.

Productivity is where the 13-inch display starts to justify its size. Writing an email, reviewing a presentation or working through a lengthy document is simply more comfortable when there is more screen available. You can see more content at once, spend less time zooming and scrolling, and make better use of multitasking features.

Add a physical keyboard and the experience moves closer to that of a lightweight laptop. HONOR’s positioning around PC-level productivity is supported by features such as PC-class file management, while HONOR Connect is designed to simplify file transfers between devices, including iOS and products from other brands.

That does not mean the Pad X9b Max can replace a conventional laptop for everyone. Specialist software, complex spreadsheets and intensive professional applications remain better suited to a full computer. For email, writing, research, document review, meetings and general office work, however, the tablet can handle a considerable amount without requiring you to carry a laptop everywhere.

Battery
Battery capacity is one of the most important considerations with a large-screen tablet, and HONOR has fitted the Pad X9b Max with a 10,100mAh typical-capacity battery. It also supports 45W SuperCharge.

HONOR quotes up to 16 hours of local video playback, 13 hours of WPS PDF use and 12 hours of notebook use. Even with that qualification, the battery capacity gives the tablet the endurance expected from an all-day device. A typical mix of web browsing, email, reading, streaming and productivity work should not require you to constantly keep an eye on the battery indicator.

Charging is reasonably quick for a battery of this size, too. HONOR quotes approximately 105 minutes for a full charge under its test conditions, while the 45W charging system makes shorter top-ups more practical.

Gaming
Gaming is possible on the Pad X9b Max, although it is not the tablet’s primary purpose. The 120Hz display is useful for compatible games, particularly those where smooth scrolling and animation make a noticeable difference. The large screen also provides more room for controls and interface elements.

The Snapdragon 685 places a natural ceiling on what the tablet can comfortably do, however. Less demanding games should be fine, while more graphically intensive titles will expose the limitations of the hardware.

HONOR quotes up to eight hours of PUBG gameplay, although, as with its other battery figures, real-world results will depend on settings and usage. In other words, gaming works well as part of the tablet’s overall feature set, but it should not be the main reason for buying it.

Cameras
Photography is clearly not the main focus here. The rear camera is a 5MP autofocus unit with an f/2.2 aperture, while the standard front camera is a 5MP fixed-focus unit.

For video calls, scanning documents and occasional snapshots, that hardware should be sufficient. It is not intended to compete with the camera systems found on modern smartphones.

That is hardly a major weakness for this category. Most people buying a 13-inch tablet are more likely to care about screen quality, battery life, speakers and productivity than photographic performance.

MagicOS
The Pad X9b Max runs MagicOS 10.0 based on Android 16. The software has an important role to play because a large Android tablet needs to do more than simply stretch a phone interface across a bigger screen.

HONOR’s productivity features help make the larger canvas more useful. File management, connectivity between devices and PC-oriented functions are aimed at users who want to use the tablet for actual work rather than simply consume content.

HONOR Connect is particularly relevant for people who move between different devices, with the company highlighting file transfers to iOS and other brands.

For users already invested in the HONOR ecosystem, those features can make the tablet more convenient as part of a broader collection of devices. Students are likely to get a lot out of the Pad X9b Max. The large, sharp display is well suited to textbooks, PDFs, online lectures and research, while the long battery life makes it practical for extended study sessions.

Adding a keyboard also turns it into a useful writing device for assignments and notes. Expandable storage provides another advantage for students who need to keep large quantities of course material available offline.

Professionals have a similar reason to consider it. Email, document review, presentations, video meetings and web research can all be handled comfortably, particularly when the tablet is used with a keyboard.

For frequent travellers, that flexibility can be particularly appealing. A tablet that can serve as an entertainment device after work and a productivity machine during the day can reduce the need to carry multiple devices.

The Pad X9b Max works best when it is treated as a hybrid device. During the working day, the 13-inch screen can be used for emails, documents, research and meetings. Later, it becomes a large portable screen for films, television and music. The battery is large enough to support extended sessions, while expandable storage gives the device room for a substantial amount of offline content.

Verdict
The HONOR Pad X9b Max is an interesting proposition because it does not attempt to win on processing power alone. Instead, it concentrates on the aspects of a tablet that affect everyday use most directly.

The 13-inch 2.5K 120Hz display is the centrepiece. It makes reading, browsing, working and watching video more enjoyable, while the four-speaker system and IMAX Enhanced support add considerable entertainment value.

The 10,100mAh battery and 45W charging provide the endurance needed to make the tablet genuinely useful throughout the day. Expandable storage of up to 2TB is another welcome practical feature, particularly for people who intend to keep large amounts of content on the device.

Performance is the one area where buyers should keep their expectations in check. This is a capable everyday tablet rather than a high-performance computing device. That distinction becomes important if gaming or demanding professional applications are central to your requirements.

For everyone else, the balance is appealing. The Pad X9b Max is comfortable for reading, enjoyable for entertainment and sufficiently capable for everyday productivity. Add the keyboard and it becomes a credible lightweight work device; leave the keyboard behind and it remains a very capable media and browsing tablet.

Ultimately, the HONOR Pad X9b Max succeeds because it understands what makes a large tablet useful. It gives users plenty of screen, plenty of battery and plenty of flexibility, while keeping performance appropriate to the workloads most people will actually throw at it.

For students, professionals, travellers and home users looking for a tablet that can comfortably move between work, study and entertainment, the Pad X9b Max makes a compelling case.
