Schneider Electric Powers VDX: World’s First Commercial Vertiport Takes Shape in Dubai

Energy technology specialist Schneider Electric has teamed up with Skyports Infrastructure, a leader in vertiport development for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, to deliver the energy and digital foundation for VDX. Located adjacent to Dubai International Airport, VDX stands as the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport.

Following technical completion in April 2026 and official eVTOL certification in July 2026, VDX serves as the primary hub and launch site for Dubai’s upcoming electric air taxi network. Additional vertiports are already in progress across Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah.

Equipped to accommodate up to 170,000 travelers annually, the facility pioneers a new category of transit demanding next-generation electrical infrastructure. Critical requirements include high-output fast charging for Joby Aviation’s aircraft, aviation-grade safety systems, and unified intelligence linking power, charging, and building operations.

Schneider Electric’s end-to-end deployment comprises digital low-voltage switchboards, intelligent building management, EcoStruxure Power Operation at VDX synchronized with the Dubai Marina facility, ION9000 power quality tracking, smart metering, power factor correction capacitor banks, and Galaxy UPS systems to safeguard critical loads.

The architecture is built around three core pillars. First, operational resilience ensures continuous flight readiness via real-time system monitoring that flags and resolves irregularities before they affect flights. Second, energy intelligence optimizes facility-wide consumption while dynamically aligning aircraft charging with real-time power demand. Third, network scalability establishes a standardized digital template, enabling seamless data integration with flight scheduling platforms and rapid rollout across future stations.

Upon reaching full commercial operations, the site’s integrated systems are projected to reduce energy usage by as much as 25%. The initiative aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and its 20-Minute City framework, which aims to ensure residents can reach essential daily destinations within 20 minutes. Air taxi transit will slash typical 45-minute road trips down to roughly 12 minutes, establishing Dubai at the forefront of mainstream urban air mobility.

“Charging electric aircraft creates some pretty significant and rapidly changing power demands,” said Gareth Wilson, General Manager, Dubai, Skyports Infrastructure. “At the same time, the terminal and all of its critical systems need to stay fully operational. We chose Schneider Electric to provide us with power infrastructure that is resilient, responsive and intelligent. Most importantly, the scalable approach gives us something we can replicate across the wider Dubai network. As we continue to add more vertiports, it provides us with a baseline that we can confidently continue to roll out.”

“Our collaboration with Skyports Infrastructure marks a significant step towards redefining the future of urban mobility,” said Amel Chadli, Gulf Cluster and Countries President at Schneider Electric. “The vertiport at Dubai International Airport, VDX, reflects Dubai’s position as a global leader in adopting the technologies that will define the next generation of transport. As Skyports’ energy technology partner, our role is to provide the energy and digital infrastructure that enables safe, reliable and efficient operations from day one, with an architecture built to scale as the network expands across the city.”

As VDX finalizes operational onboarding, operational analytics will guide charging cycle management, load efficiency, and passenger throughput standards for all subsequent vertiports across the regional network.
